What is Organics? Today, most of the commercial food is raised or grown with the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals. These toxins are absorbed by the crops or livestock, and, ultimately, consumed by you. Organic food is grown without the use of antibiotics, chemicals, pesticides, unnatural fertilizers, or any other harmful substances. What is Organic Matter? Manure, straw, hay, plant debris, seaweed, or any other bulky material of living origin is considered organic matter. What is soil fertility? Soil fertility is how rich the soil is with nutrients, humus, and other soil matter. Fertile soil contains nutrients essential for plant growth, excellent soil structure, and a steady population of microorganisms. Soil fertility can be improved with organic matter. What are beneficial insects? Beneficial insects are those that are helpful in the garden because they prey on pests. Some beneficial insects include: centipedes, ground beetles, lacewings, ladybugs, hoverflies, and anthocorid bugs. What is Sustainable Agriculture? Sustainable agriculture is a philosophy and practice that aims to create a balanced and healthy environment which produces healthy crops. This practice goes beyond gardening without chemicals and pesticides; it means working with nature, not against it. By building up soil fertility through cover crops and rotation, and diversifying the beneficial insect population, a thriving eco system is created. What are Cover Crops? Cover crops meet several needs in organic sustainable agriculture. They provide nutrients that are desperately needed to improve the soil fertility. When these nutrients are plowed under, they increase the fertility and humus levels. Cover crops also reduce the growth of weeds in the soil. But most importantly, they attract beneficial insect that w3ill enhance the growth of the crops.
