The donkey is a playful and gentle creature, who has a legend begins somewhere around 0-35 AD. That legend is the myth of the donkey's cross. One story states that when Mary was riding on the donkey, pregnant with Jesus, the cross was formed upon its back as a premonition of Christ's destiny. Another legend goes that when Jesus came into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, he was riding on a donkey. A few days later, Jesus was crucified, but the donkey remained in the city. As Jesus hung upon the cross the donkey shed a tear and turned his back towards the cross. As the shadow of the cross fell on his back, it was burned forever upon the donkeys back. |
